HI, I'M MADISON

I’m interested in observing the internalization of American mythology and how (or why) perpetuated stories and images become a part of our personal identities. I think this is why I like analyzing movies, our psychology around the self is so openly displayed — we see an ideal character or story arc and try to recreate it in our own lives. This is where the dividing line sways flexibly between the self and the culture/media surrounding it, its arresting to consider how much of our subjectivity and way of being in the world is influenced and even created through this back and forth dance.

Although I am simply fond of the popular aesthetics and visual themes of the post-war period, I feel compelled to return to it repeatedly for deeper reasons. The extreme cultural shiftings of the 1960s and 1970s have become their own entity, something floating around the zeitgeist waiting to be tapped into. It sounds strange, but I feel like I am astrally tethered to the residual energy of this time period. I don’t think I’ve achieved it quite yet but I want my paintings to carry that haunting quality to the viewer, to convey something nostalgic but also elusive and unfamiliar.

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Oregon (2020) and currently reside in Portland, Oregon with my loving husband and kitty cat.
