ARTIST    STATEMENT

There is a magic that is inherent to painting, transmuting thoughts and feelings into visual form is its own mystical act. Symbolism is a part of this magic, I’m particularly interested in how certain images embed themselves within the unconscious mind, weaving through time as perpetuated paradigms and archetypes. I try to imbue some of that mysticism into my paintings by using saturated color palettes, juxtaposing elements of realism with flat, graphic surfaces, and referencing both ancient and modern images and symbols.

I find something compelling about the division between idealization and reality. I often return to the idealized conceptualization of America and think about how that concept has impacted the world’s cultural landscape. I like to think about the historical sequence of the past century and how social ideals like freedom, independence, and patriotism have evolved through time. The optimistic idealism of the 1960s blossomed into the extreme decadence of the 1970s, this was a potent portion of time when the chasm between idealization and reality clearly revealed itself, prompting a rapid evolution of social ideals.

Nostalgia is something I both indulge in and observe; It creates a haunting effect in the soul, stirs a longing, emphasizes what a bittersweet predicament it is to be a human being. I’ve always been fascinated with mid-century pop culture and its overall aesthetic, I try to implement these elements in a way that feels familiar yet uncanny, similar to those haunting qualities of nostalgia. The energetic imprint left by mid-century America has become an influential ghost, manifesting itself repeatedly and continually informing my work.
