Original painting (October 2021)
Oil on canvas
18 x 24 inches
The reference image used for this piece has been taken from a 1960s James Bond movie still. I was thinking about classic depictions of coolness, masculinity, the idea of a man’s man, and the boyhood fantasies this movie franchise has perpetuated throughout the last 60 years. Additionally, I was using this painting as a chance to do a sort of color study, to convey a particular mood through the fading twilight palette; it seems as though the sun is setting in this painting, creating an air of contemplation while signifying a change in society’s ideas related to masculinity.
