Original painting (December 2021)
Oil on canvas
20 x 20 inches
This piece vacillates somewhere between object and painting, reality and illusion. TV had similar qualities when it began entering American homes in the 1950s — it brought the masses the magic of futurism with literal illusions displayed on-screen, a light up box of projected images. Since I’m so immersed in mid century American culture, I find myself interested in how TV has become interwoven into our daily lives throughout the past 70 years; we’ve built routines around it, normalized its ongoing stream of background noise, and created comforting rituals with it like watching the evening news.
