Original painting (November 2021)

Oil on canvas

36 x 48 inches

The figures in this painting are from a photo taken at a 1960s party inside the original Chicago, Illinois Playboy mansion. I used this piece as an opportunity to challenge my skill set, a study comprised of bold colors and various visual textures. I wanted to capture the realistic aspects of the two figures while using the ombre velvet curtain to create an evocative, twilight atmosphere. Additionally, and apropos to the context of the reference photo, I’ve been contemplating the role of substance use within midcentury American culture and how that role has affected the contemporary view and social acceptability of those substances.
